Lieutenant Colonel Sidney F. Mitchell, USMC

            Lieutenant Colonel Mitchell received a Bachelor of Science degree in History from Southern Oregon University and received his commission in May 1984. After graduating from The Basic School in February 1985, Second Lieutenant Mitchell was designated an Infantry Officer.

           
His first assignment was with 1st Marine Division, where he served as a Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer with 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines and 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California from 1985 to 1989. During this assignment he deployed twice to the Western Pacific with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

            Following this assignment, Captain Mitchell was transferred to Recruiting Station Salt Lake City, where he served as the Officer Selection Officer and Station Executive Officer until 1992. After completing the Amphibious Warfare School, he was reassigned to the 2
nd Marine Division in June 1993.

            Reporting to the 2nd Marine Division, he served as the Helicopter-borne Company Commander for 3
rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment. During this period, BLT 3/2 deployed with the 26 MEU (SOC) as LF6F 2-94, and participated in the planning/support of real world contingencies off the coast of Somalia and the Adriatic Sea. Promoted to Major in 1995, he served as the Battalion Executive Officer until his reassignment to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in August 1995.


            Reporting to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in August 1995, Major Mitchell served as the Regimental Operations Officer for the Recruit Training Regiment and the Executive Officer for the First Recruit Training. Battalion, until he was selected to attend the Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth Kansas in June 1998. While stationed at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Major Mitchell earned his Masters of Arts Degree in Management from the University of Redlands.

            Following graduation from the Army Command and General Staff College in May 1999, Major Mitchell received orders to the United Nations Command, Military Armistice Commission, Republic of Korea. Serving as the Operations Chief of the United Nations Command, Major Mitchell was responsible for monitoring and reporting all activity in the Korean Demilitarized Zone, coordinating Secretary of State Madeline Albright's visit to North Korea and the opening of a transportation corridor between the two Koreas.

            He was selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in 2000, and was subsequently assigned to Headquarters Marine, Manpower and Reserve Affairs in August 2001; Lieutenant Colonel Mitchell currently serves as the Branch Head Semper Fit Programs, Personal and Family Readiness Division, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Headquarters, United States Marine Corps.


            Lieutenant Colonel Mitchell's personal awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and gold star, and the Joint Service Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
