Captain Tony Laird was born in Little Rock, Arkansas.  He graduated from Oregon State University (NROTC) in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He was designated a Naval Aviator in August 1981.

Upon completion of the SH-3 FRS at HS-10, Captain Laird joined the World Famous Golden Falcons of HS-2 of CVW-2 embarked in USS RANGER.  He served as Material Control officer, Personnel Officer, ASW Officer and Admin Officer during that tour.  He also completed two Western Pacific deployments. 

His first shore tour was at HS-10 in San Diego as an Instructor Pilot.  He was an ASW Ground School Instructor, the Squadron NATOPS Officer and eventually the CNAP H-3 NATOPS Evaluator.

Captain Laird next reported to Commander, Carrier Group Seven as FLAG LT. He made one Western Pacific deployment with CCG-7 and qualified as a watch stander in TFCC.

Following that, Captain Laird reported to the Naval Military Personnel Command, NMPC, as the Helicopter Junior Officer Shore Detailer.  After a two-year tour there, he transitioned to the H-60 and reported back to the World Famous Golden Falcons of HS-2 for his department head tour.  He served as Safety Officer and Operations Officer and made one deployment to the Arabian Gulf.

Captain Laird then reported to Commander, Helicopter HS Wing, Pacific as the Operations Officer.  He remained there for one year and then transferred to HS-10 as the Executive Officer. While there, he was selected for commander command and subsequently went to National War College.  Upon graduation from National War College, Captain Laird reported to the Black Knights of HS-4 for his command tour. He made one deployment to the Arabian Gulf during this tour.

Captain Laird was next assigned to N52 of the OPNAV Staff where he served as Branch Head, Political-Military Affairs, Asia-Pacific.  Following that, he reported to the CNAF staff in San Diego as Deputy ACOS for Personnel, eventually fleeting up to be the ACOS for Manpower and Personnel (N1).  He was then ordered back to the OPNAV Staff as Branch Head, Officer and Enlisted Personnel Policy, N131.  After a year there, he was transferred to N126 as Branch Head, Capability Assessments and Lean Six Sigma.  In July 2007 he took over command of NROTCU, University of California, Berkeley.

Captain Laird’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit (2 awards), the Navy-Marine Corps Medal for Heroism, the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), The Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards) and various unit and campaign ribbons.
