MEMORANDUM

From:   BCO

To:       Battalion

Subj:    MIDTERM EVALS

Ref:   (a)  Eval Instructions

(b) Completed Midterm Eval

(c) Eval Template

1.  Overview: Midterm evals are upon us. All midshipmen are required to complete midterm evals IAW the instructions below NLT Thursday, 18 March at 1400.

2.  Purpose: The midterm eval process has two main objectives: to provide midshipmen with feedback they can use to further their development as leaders and to prepare midshipmen for final evals by familiarizing them with the eval process.  All midshipmen should endeavor to make the most of the midterm eval process by seeking and providing honest and candid feedback about their performance and role in Naval ROTC. Midterm evals are an excellent opportunity to begin improving in areas that need work, as well as to share with our fellow midshipmen our knowledge and skills in areas that are strengths. All midshipmen should use their feedback to set goals for the end of the semester and beyond.

3.   Process

    a.  The midterm eval process is the same as the first round of final evals. Most underclass midshipmen will only be evaluated by their immediate superiors. Most upperclass midshipmen will be evaluated by their immediate superiors and be evaluating their immediate subordinates.

       (2) Complete blocks 1-11. Directions can be found on the website IAW reference (b). Use capital X’s for all check boxes. Some points specific to midterm evals:

Box 4: check “other.”

Box 5: 04MAR18

Box 6: check “special”

Box 7: list the score of your last PRT and the date (YYMMMDD).

        (3) Save your eval form as LastnameFI_MT (for example, I would save mine as BrethauerJ_MT). Email it to your first round evaluator. Complete this step NLT Thursday, 11 March at 1400.

        (4) Meet with your first round evaluator to discuss your midterm evaluation. It is preferable to do this in person, but if you are at different campuses it is permissible to do it over the phone. When this step is completed, fill in blocks 12 and 14 IN PEN. Complete this step NLT Thursday, 18 March at 1400.

    c.  First round evaluators:

        (1) Proofread the eval forms completed by your subordinates. If the formatting is incorrect, return it for corrections. This is an important step that will reduce errors when we do final evals.

        (2) Once the form is formatted correctly, complete blocks 15-20 (skip 19) and 23 only. Follow the directions as listed in reference (b). Save the form.

        (3) You will meet with your subordinates to give them counseling, explain your remarks, and offer advice for improvement. This should be done in person, but midshipmen on different campuses may need to meet over the phone. Once this is done, sign block 13 on the same copy as your subordinate has signed block 14. Make a photocopy of the form for your subordinate to keep and place the original in BCO’s box. Complete this step NLT Thursday, 18 March at 1400.

4.  Direct all questions through your chain of command.
