Information pertinent to being a member of the United States Navy or Marine Corps is called "knowledge" or "gouge" and helps to instruct and guide Midshipmen in their quest to be Navy or Marine Corps Officers. Midshipmen are required to be able to repeat, without hesitation, certain facts, principles, and guidelines to demonstrate that they have internalized the information. While gouge is generally only checked during inspections, Midshipmen are expected to know the information at all times and to be able to use and demonstrate the concepts taught to them.
