Physical activity is of utmost importance in the military and a focus of the NROTC program. Midshipmen are expected to achieve and maintain a high level of physical fitness. In order to meet the demands of this task, Athletics Squad must administer the Physical Readiness Test (PRT) twice a year and record the scores. If any MIDN has a score that is below what the Navy requires or just below what he or she would like, they can attend Motivational Physical Training (MPT) sessions that are put on by the Athletics squad. These sessions are geared toward the level of the individuals in attendance and the workouts usually center around calisthenics, running and swimming, but alternative workouts often take place.
Some of these alternative workouts have included mountain biking, long distance run/hikes, and football games, and there have even been reports of MIDN doing relays across campus pushing a Volkswagen Bug. These MPT sessions are meant to encourage and, as the name implies, motivate interested midshipmen to seek and achieve the stellar physical standard that is necessary in the Navy and Marine Corps.
